Bio

Houston Filipino Artist, Mariel Agbayani Bathan, was born in Chicago, Illinois. Bathan and her family moved to Missouri City,TX in the late 70’s where she attended Fort Bend County schools.

After graduating from Texas State University with a Bachelors of Fine Art, Bathan moved to San Antonio, creating fabric sculptures and mixed media pieces. Bathan moved back to Houston in 2014 and lives in East Downtown with her husband, Rich.

Since being back in Houston, Bathan has been a featured artist at Vino Vinyl, Hardy and Nance Art Studios, Donkeeboy and Friends Art Shows, and has participated in Reginald C Adam’s Community Art Murals for the City of Houston and The Super Bowl Commission.  

Influenced by Basquiat, Cy Twombly, Gaudi and Picasso, each painting is a study in composition, color, and stories influenced by her culture and life experiences. Visitors can expect dramatic, textured pieces which will evoke feelings of bliss and intensity.

Artist Statement

I find it inspiring to combine vibrant colors, found objects , and text and have them serve as a reminder that interest, beauty and amusement can be found in everyday objects.
